ACTION Honorees at Fifth Annual Banquet April 8, 2011
Mr. Herb Washington Honoree for Community Investment:
Education - Graduate of Michigan State University, 1972
Work Experience - Mcdonald's owner for 30 years, currently owns 23 McDonald's Restaurants Prior to McDonald's, employed by Michigan Bell Telephone Company as the Assistant Personal Director.
Board Memberships: Member of the Board of Directors of the Manufacturers and Traders Bank of Buffalo, NY, National Black McDonald's Association, and the Big Ten Athletic Advisory Commission.
Awards and Accomplishments: One of the largest African American McDonald's owner/operator, Identified by Black Enterprise Magazine as one of the top 100 black owned campaniles for retail in the United States, former member of the Federal Reserve Bank of NY, Recipient of the N.C.A.A. Silver Anniversary Award for community and civic leadership, Recipient of the McDonald's Gerry Newman Award, Played professional baseball for the World Champion Oakland A's, Former member of the New York State Boxing Commission. Member of Flint, Michigan Hall of Fame, Member of the Michigan State Hall of Fame, N.C.A.A. champion and big ten champion, drafted by the Baltimore Colts football team, High School, College and world holder in track and field 5.0 for 50 yds. and 5.8 for 60 yards., and former owner of the Youngstown Steelhounds professional hockey team.
Mr. William Mullane Honoree for Community Service:
William "Bill" Mullane is currently the Supervisor of School Improvement for the Ashtabula County Educational Service Center and the Jefferson Area Local Schools. He served as principal at Warren G. Harding Schools for twenty eight years. He is a founding member of the Dream Team which upholds the legacy and principles of non-violence of the late civil rights icon, Rev. Dr. Martin luther King Jr.
He obtained his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Art Education from Kent State University in 1979. He completed his Masters of Science in Education Administration from Youngstown State University. He is also an alumnus of the Leadership Warren Program.
In addition to his work as an educator, Bill has worked within the region's art and culture community for more than thirty years and currently is a board member at the Trumbull Art Gallery, the Fine Arts Council of Trumbull County and the Region's Power of the Arts initiative.
Committed to social justice and community empowerment throughout the Mahoning Valley, he serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Raymond John Wean Foundation, Advisory Board, member for the Turning Technology Foundation, and Board Chairman of the mahoning Valley Organizing Collaborative. He also is president of the Board of Education for Southside Academy and was appointed by former Governor Ted Strickland as a member of the Board of Trustees at Eastern Gateway Community College. Bill resides in Warren, Ohio and is married to Patricia Latham.
Mrs. Annie Gillam Honoree for Public Service:
First Ward Councilwoman Annie Gillam was born in Ocilla, Georgia being raised in Youngstown, Ohio since the age of three.She is a graduate of Youngstown City Schools. Mrs. Gillam retired from Delphi Packard Electric after 30 years of service. She is the Vice-President of A. Gillam & Associates, Inc. and Director of Accounts.
Councilwoman Gillam serves as the chairperson for the City Council's Safety and Public Health Committees, Vice-Chairperson of both General Improvements and the Legislation Committees. She is also a member of the Off-Street and C.D.A. Committees.We also applaud her efforts that resulted in the blighted property, which once housed a prestigious funeral home establishment, being restored to productive use in record time. Furthermore, she can be seen frequently leading volunteer efforts to beautify various streets and removing discarded trash.
In addition, Councilwoman Gallam's community involvement includes, serving as Vice President of The Northeast Homeowners Association, a member of the Board of Directors Youngstown Cityscape, member of Streetscape and Advisory Board member for Youngstown Aferschool Alliance.She is also affiliated with POGO block watch, 4 Square block watch and the NAACP, along with the Warren-Youngstown Urban League.She is also a member of ACTION crime and Safety Committee.
Councilwoman Gillam has been married for 48 years to former Councilman Artis Gillam, Sr. They have four children - Artis Jr., Arnold, Adrienne, and Andrea and seven grandchildren. She is a member of Price Memorial Church AME Zion Church.
St. Michael Roman Catholic Church & Father Terrance Hazel Honoree Humanitarian Award
St. Michael has been an engaging agent of social change in the Mahoning Valley as a member of ACTION. They also have an international outreach and have pursued numerous mission expeditions to Haiti. St. Michael parish is Diocese of Richmond's twenty year old Haiti Twinning Ministry. The primary purpose of the Haiti Twinning Ministry is to develop relationships that will benefit the people in both parishes. Through their deliberate acts of love and kindness, they have provided housing and food to our Haitian brothers and sisters. Furthermore, they have underwritten medical and academic needs in this region for a sustained period resulting in a greater quality of life for many orphans.
The Raymond John Wean Foundation Honoree The Francis Kerpsack Award
Through its capacity building initiative and focus, The Raymond John Wean Foundation is committed to helping the Mahoning Valley become a healthy place to live, work and raise families. The Raymond John Wean Foundation would like to see the area become known for equity, innovation and collaboration. The Foundation seeks to help foster initiatives that will create a robust civic life and a dynamic and diversified economy with a good range of jobs and safe and attractive neighborhoods.
Through strategic grant making, the Foundation seeks to create various opportunities for people living in the Valley's economically disadvantaged communities and neighborhoods.
To be successful in school and in life, the young children of the Mahoning Valley (birth through age five) must grow up in an environment that develops their self-confidence, social emotional skills and a love for learning. The Early Childhood Development program provides grants to organizations seeking to accomplish these goals. The Foundation supports nonprofit organizations and public agencies committed to advancing programs, policies and practices that better the lives of youn children and strengthens their families.
By promoting collaborative working relationships and supporting the development of networks and partnerships, The Raymond John Wean Foundation can invest in a thoughtful process of community change with an emphasis on collaboration and building on community assets.
